Slack App
Overview
The Kowiki Slack app brings your entire wiki into Slack. Team members can search for answers, browse sections, share pages to channels, and ask the AI Knowledge Agent questions β all through familiar Slack interactions.
Everyone who accesses Kowiki through Slack counts as a synced user, which means unlimited seats regardless of your billing plan.
Requirements
Before installing the Slack app, confirm the following:
- An active Slack workspace
- Admin permission to install apps in your Slack workspace (or the ability to request approval from a workspace admin)
- A Kowiki workspace with at least one published page
Installation
- Open your Kowiki workspace settings and navigate to Apps.
- Find the Slack card and click Install.
- Slack prompts you to authorize the Kowiki app. Review the requested permissions and click Allow.
- Select the Slack workspace where you want to install the app.
- Once authorized, the Slack app appears in your workspace's app list and is ready to use.
After installation, all members of your Slack workspace can interact with Kowiki. No individual setup is required.
Features
Slash Commands
The Kowiki Slack app responds to the following commands:
- /kowiki search [query] β Search your wiki for pages matching your query. Results appear as a private message with links to matching pages.
- /kowiki browse β Open an interactive browser to navigate your wiki's sections and pages without leaving Slack.
Slash command results are visible only to the person who triggered them, so you can search without creating noise in a channel.
Browsing the Wiki
Use /kowiki browse to navigate through your wiki's structure. The browser displays sections and pages in a clickable list. Select a page to view its content in a formatted Slack message, or share it to the current channel.
Sharing Pages to Channels
When you find a page β through search or browsing β you can share it to any channel or conversation. Shared pages appear as rich previews with the page title, a content snippet, and a link to the full page.
This makes it straightforward to answer a teammate's question by sharing the relevant documentation directly in the thread.
AI Knowledge Agent
The AI Knowledge Agent is available in two ways within Slack:
- DM the Kowiki bot β Send a direct message to the Kowiki app. Ask any question and it responds using your wiki content as its knowledge base.
- @mention in channels β Mention @Kowiki in any channel or thread. The agent responds in the thread with an answer drawn from your wiki.
Conversations are thread-based, so the agent maintains context across follow-up questions within the same thread. Start a new thread for a new topic.
Tips for Team Adoption
- Pin a message in your #general or #team channel explaining that the Kowiki bot is available for questions.
- Encourage @mentions β when someone asks a question in a channel, suggest they @mention Kowiki to find the answer from existing documentation.
- Use search in context β remind team members they can run /kowiki search right in the middle of a conversation to pull up relevant pages.
- Share pages proactively β when you update documentation, share the page to relevant channels so people know it exists.
- Combine with the Web Wiki β link to the Web Wiki for longer reading sessions, and use Slack for quick lookups and sharing.
Troubleshooting
If the slash commands are not appearing, confirm the app is installed in your workspace by checking Settings & Administration > Manage Apps in Slack. If the app requires approval in your workspace, ask your Slack admin to approve the Kowiki app from the pending requests list.
