Sections
Sections are the top-level containers in your Kowiki knowledge base. Think of them as folders or categories that group related pages together. A well-organized section structure helps your team find information faster and keeps your wiki intuitive as it grows.
Understanding sections
Every page in your knowledge base belongs to a section. Sections appear in the sidebar navigation and serve as the primary way readers browse your content. You can nest sections inside other sections to create a hierarchy that mirrors how your team thinks about information.
Creating a new section
- Open your knowledge base and navigate to the Sections panel in the sidebar.
- Click the + New Section button at the bottom of the section list.
- Enter a name for your section.
- Choose a parent section if you want to nest it inside an existing section, or leave it at the top level.
- Select an icon or emoji to visually distinguish the section.
- Click Create Section to save.
Your new section appears in the sidebar and is ready to hold pages.
Reordering sections
You can control the display order of sections to put the most important categories first.
- Navigate to the Sections panel in the sidebar.
- Hover over the section you want to move until the drag handle appears.
- Drag the section to your desired position in the list.
- Release to drop it in place.
The new order saves automatically and reflects immediately for all readers.
Nesting sections (sub-sections)
Sub-sections let you build deeper hierarchies without cluttering the top level. For example, an "Engineering" section might contain sub-sections for "Backend," "Frontend," and "Infrastructure."
To create a sub-section:
- Right-click an existing section or click the β― menu next to it.
- Select Add Sub-section.
- Name the sub-section and configure its icon.
- Click Create Section.
To convert an existing top-level section into a sub-section:
- Open the visual content map or drag the section in the sidebar.
- Drop it onto the target parent section.
Sub-sections can be nested multiple levels deep, though we recommend keeping your hierarchy to three levels or fewer for readability.
Section icons and emoji
Icons give readers a quick visual cue about what a section contains. Each section can display either a built-in icon or an emoji.
- Click the icon area next to the section name (or the β― menu and select Change Icon).
- Browse the icon library or switch to the Emoji tab.
- Select your choice.
- The icon updates immediately in the sidebar and on all pages within that section.
Setting section-level permissions
Sections support granular access control so you can restrict sensitive content to specific teams or roles.
- Open the β― menu on the section you want to configure.
- Select Permissions.
- Choose who can view the section: Everyone, specific teams, or specific members.
- Click Save.
Pages inside a restricted section inherit its permissions automatically. Readers without access do not see the section in navigation or search results.
For detailed permission configuration options, see Section-Level Permissions.
Tips for organizing sections
- Name sections clearly β use terms your team already uses in everyday conversation.
- Start broad, then refine β begin with a few top-level sections and add sub-sections as content grows.
- Review quarterly β as your knowledge base evolves, revisit your section structure to ensure it still makes sense.
- Use permissions intentionally β restrict only what needs restricting to avoid creating information silos.
